Psychosomatic Medicine Fellowship: Living in Greater Hartford
The Hartford area offers residents the best of New England
and the Northeast. Hartford, the capital of Connecticut, abounds in occupational and
educational opportunities, housing, shopping, historical points of interest, and
cultural and recreational activities. The city is centrally located in the
beautiful Connecticut River Valley, midway between Boston and New York (less
than a two-hour drive to either city). Hartford is also ideally situated for
travel to attractions such as Cape Cod, the mountains of Vermont and New
Hampshire, and the coast of Maine. Hartford is no more than six hours from any
point between Washington, DC, and Montreal. Greater Hartford, which
includes the city and 32 suburbs, has nearly one million residents.
Hartford is the home of the Wadsworth Athenaeum, the oldest
public art museum in the country. The esteemed 80-member Hartford Symphony, the
Hartford Ballet Company, the Hartford Stage Company (which was awarded a 1989
Tony Award for the best regional theater in the United States), and Bushnell
Memorial Hall (a 3,000-seat auditorium that presents Broadway shows, visiting
performances, lectures, and other entertainment) offer programs throughout the
year. The Meadows Music Theater, which is one of the largest indoor/outdoor
music theaters in the country, brings a diverse and eclectic variety of musical
performances to Hartford.
Sports fans are well entertained in Hartford. The city’s
Civic Center is the home site of the American Hockey League's Hartford
Wolf Pack. The
University of Connecticut’s Division I men’s and women’s championship basketball
teams also play several of their home games at the Civic Center. A new football stadium for the University of Connecticut has been built
in nearby East Hartford. Minor league baseball and World Team Tennis provide
sports enthusiasts with the opportunity to enjoy many different activities.
For both varsity athletes and those who enjoy more relaxed play, the area offers
organized competition in the following sports: soccer, swimming,
basketball, ice hockey, lacrosse, tennis, softball, and golf. Downhill and
cross-country skiing, mountain and road biking are also popular.
The transportation systems in the Hartford area are
convenient and make most places in the city little more than an exit ramp away.
The Institute of Living, Hartford Hospital, and Connecticut Children’s Medical
Center are situated within the same square mile.
Opportunities for professional development abound in the
region and the state. Connecticut benefits from a sophisticated population that
provides a significant degree of support for the provision of psychiatric
services. Practice opportunities continue to be available throughout the area.
In addition to a variety of advanced research and clinical training
opportunities available through our program affiliates, the nearby Western New
England Psychoanalytic Institute provides opportunities for advanced training in
psychoanalysis.
The residency program is designed so that residents who wish
to remain in Connecticut following training have opportunities to make contacts
with psychiatrists in a variety of settings within the state. In addition, The
Institute of Living and other affiliated institutions have a strong and ongoing
commitment to make faculty and staff positions available to graduates who wish
to enter academic or full-time institutional careers.
