Child & Adolescent
Psychiatry Residency: Residents' Letter
August 2008
Dear Prospective Candidates,
Thank you for you interest in our program. We are
pleased that you are taking the time to explore our website and we hope to pique
your interest and show you why we think we have one of the best programs around.
The Institute of Living (IOL) was founded in 1822
and was the first hospital of any kind in the state of Connecticut. Over time,
as a member of one of the Ivy League of psychiatric hospitals, the IOL has
continued to flourish and remain at the forefront of quality psychiatric care,
and we are proud to have been named one of the top 25 psychiatric hospitals in
the country by U.S. News and World Report magazine for the past two years
(2007, 2008). As the behavioral health component of Hartford Hospital (the
largest hospital in the state of Connecticut), we have a wide catchment area
and serve central Connecticut and beyond as a major referral center. We also
maintain close ties, both geographically and professionally, with Connecticut
Children’s Medical Center, the only free-standing independent hospital in
Connecticut devoted exclusively to the care of children and adolescents.
Our program offers trainees the opportunity to receive
superb training from distinguished faculty in a stimulating academic
environment. Our department is devoted to
providing an excellent psychiatric education for child and adolescent fellows.
Carefully designed clinical rotations and extensive didactics combine to
provide a broad and thorough education. Clinical experiences take place in
nearly every setting including inpatient, outpatient, medical, residential,
school, juvenile justice, and in-home service settings. Our program
also contains an outstanding forensic component that includes mock trials,
actual trial observation, and regular interdisciplinary seminars with local
forensic psychologists, attorneys, and judges. In addition to our
comprehensive and diverse clinical training opportunities, there are also
ample opportunities for research through one of the several research centers
conveniently located on campus.
Trainees are encouraged to develop their own special
interests by tailoring certain rotations and elective experiences as they
advance through the program. They are assisted in this by a diverse,
productive, and extremely educationally-oriented faculty who welcome their
teaching responsibilities and personal interactions with fellows. Faculty
and fellows work together to create a friendly atmosphere, which encourages
fellows to reach their full potential as psychiatric physicians.
Top 10 reasons why residents and trainees choose the
IOL's program over others:
10. Size of residency program allows personal
attention
9. Education as the priority; program
is educationally-driven, not service-driven
8. Strong psychotherapy training with
rich history and tradition
7. Close proximity of training sites, with
an extensive campus that includes inpatient, partial hospital, outpatient,
therapeutic day schools, and other specialty programs all on-site
6. Team approach of residency in a
resident-independent institution that allows for freedom to learn and
explore without the constraints of a resident-run hospital
5. Enhanced emphasis on faculty mentorship
of trainees and evidence-based learning in a supportive and nurturing
environment
4. Dedicated,
approachable, and eclectic faculty and administration who ask for trainee
input and then actually listen and make changes!
3. Moonlighting opportunities
2. Direct clinical supervision with
increasing autonomy and graduated patient care responsibility over the
course of training
1. Flexible call schedule in the
first year of training and no call schedule in the second year
Selecting a training program can be a difficult and
time-consuming process. We invite you to come visit us and check out the
best-kept secret in child and adolescent psychiatry training. We look
forward to hearing from you and welcome the opportunity to answer any
questions you may have.
Best regards and good luck!
