Anxiety Disorders Center: Virtual Reality
Study for Returning OIF/OEF Veterans

The Anxiety Disorders Center is conducting state-of-the-art
studies to examine the effectiveness of a virtual reality program for Operation Iraqi Freedom
(OIF) and
Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF) veterans with post-deployment stress. Studies are available for all male OIF/OEF veterans with or without post-deployment stress.
Virtual Reality Demonstration Study for all OIF/OEF Veterans
Veterans can participate in a one-session study to “demo” the virtual
reality program and provide their opinions about the program. This study is
open to all veterans with or without post-deployment stress.
Participation involves interviews, completing
questionnaires, and testing out the virtual reality program. Participants
are compensated $20/hour for their time, up to $120. Information
gained from this study will help improve current programs for post-deployment stress.
Virtual Reality Program for Veterans with Post-Deployment Stress
Veterans with post-deployment stress can also participate in a six-week
virtual reality program specifically designed to help OIF/OEF Veterans with
post-deployment stress.Common Problems for Returning Vets:
-
Trouble sleeping
-
Trouble focusing at work or school
-
Trouble relating to family or friends
-
Irritability or anger
-

About the six-week Virtual Reality
Program for Post-Deployment Stress
Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) is one of the most effective treatments
for helping individuals adjust to civilian life after returning from
deployment. Although CBT is highly effective, it is believed that a virtual
reality program may enhance the effectiveness of traditional CBT.
In
this study, we are testing if
a twice-weekly virtual reality CBT program can help returning
OIF/OEF vets get back the life they had before deployment. Interested veterans
will first be asked to participate in an interview to determine if the
program is a good fit for them. The program lasts six weeks and will be
followed by a three-month follow-up assessment. A small monetary incentive
is provided to individuals who complete the program.
This program is
free of charge and will not appear on military health or mental health
records.
